It is a characteristic of salvation history that all past events, all previously occurred history, is reinterpreted as a path to the present Messiah, the infallible savior of today. Christians interpreted the Old Testament solely as the preparation for Christ’s arrival – with considerable interpretative acrobatics. Hitler, the Antichrist and Karl May fan, also saw himself as the fulfillment of history (but turned out to be, to everyone’s surprise, its destroyer). And so we must accept that all of American history is nothing but the unwavering path to that Messiah who ultimately saves America from the forces of un-American evil: Donald Jesus Trump and his disciples JDV, Pete Hegseth, Marco Rubio, etc. By the way: It is an ironic side effect of the Gospel of Mark that there, Jesus’ disciples are paramount idiots.
